A wave of debate is occurring across the crypto community after long-circulating claims that certain cryptocurrencies are “ISO 20022 compliant” have come under renewed scrutiny. The debate resurfaced after industry commentators highlighted code references related to XRP and RippleNet.
At the same time, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) confirmed that the cryptocurrency itself has not been granted any form of ISO certification.
ISO clarifies that cryptocurrencies do not hold compliance status
According to a post shared by analyst Mansingh Rajput, the ISO’s own website states that no cryptocurrency meets ISO 20022 compliance. ISO noted that financial messaging standards define how banks, payment systems and financial institutions structure and exchange data. Because public blockchains operate as independent decentralized networks, ISO does not control or certify the compliance of assets such as XRP, XLM, ADA, and Quant.

Observers noted that the confusion arose because the project team described its ability to structure or interpret information in ISO 20022 format. ISO has made it clear that such functionality does not result in formal compliance. Additionally, the organization warned that online claims labeling certain tokens as compliant are false.

Developers and engineers strengthen their technological edge
The developers reiterated ISO’s position, pointing out the differences between blockchain transaction formats and standardized financial messages. Arthur, a member of the XRP community, stated that the XRPL transaction structure and ISO 20022 messages have no functional equivalence and are essentially separate systems.
Another commentator added that while Ripple’s messaging infrastructure, RippleNet, uses ISO 20022 message types such as pacs.008, XRP operates independently as a payments asset and does not form part of the messaging layer.
Quick fact check:
XRP is not “ISO-20022 compliant”.Ripplenet. ISO 20022 messages such as pacs.008 are used for cross-border payments.
XRP will be used separately as a liquidity/bridge asset and not as part of an ISO message.
Messaging = ISO 20022
Payment = XRP

Industry insiders also referred to previous comments from Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson, explaining that support for ISO 20022 is a functional requirement for linking traditional banking rails to decentralized systems. In his remarks, he mentioned ADA, XRP, HBAR, and ALGO as networks that would interface with the standard, but did not imply certification.
SWIFT completes transition to ISO 20022-only payments
Meanwhile, SWIFT has confirmed that the coexistence period between MT and ISO 20022 formats will end this weekend. From November 22, 2025, all financial institution payment instructions will be provided in ISO 20022 only.
However, the network urged participants not to send messages during the cutover period to prevent transaction rejections and operational delays.
