The Department of Defense is launching GenAI.mil, a new AI platform purpose-built for military and civilian workers, running on Google Gemini.
The launch was revealed in a video shared on Tuesday, with Army Secretary Pete Hegseth saying the system is intended to give U.S. personnel direct access to artificial intelligence tools that, in his words, will “revolutionize the way we win.”
“The future of American warfare is here, and it’s AI,” Pete said. He went on to warn that rival nations are rapidly advancing with new technology, adding, “As technology advances, so do our adversaries. But here at the Department of the Army, we are not standing still.” He acknowledged that Google Gemini was the first model introduced and that these systems are now “directly into the hands of every American warfighter.”

Pete said GenAI.mil allows users to perform deep investigations, format documents, and quickly analyze videos and images with one click. He said these tools will allow intelligence work and administrative tasks to be performed faster and with less manual effort.
He also said that the project does not end with this launch, and that the ministry plans to continue to promote the operation of the new system. “We will continue to actively utilize the world’s best technology to make our nation’s combat power even more lethal than ever before.”
He added that the platform runs only on American-made technology, “and all of it is American-made.” Pete concluded his message by saying, “The possibilities with AI are endless. Let’s get to work.”
Emil Michael, Undersecretary of the Army for Research and Technology, then issued his own statement. “In the global race for AI supremacy, there is no prize for second place,” he said.

He emphasized that while Google has been working with government agencies for years, this deployment is different in scale and scope. “With the introduction of Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government service, more than 3 million civilian and military personnel will have access to the same advanced AI that enterprises use every day to improve administrative efficiency and improve business productivity,” said Pichai.
He added that these systems are hosted within Google’s secure infrastructure, calling this “an important step in accelerating AI adoption across the public sector.”
The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of the U.S. AI Action Plan, which the White House said lists nearly 100 federal actions to accelerate U.S. innovation in artificial intelligence.
