FIFA moves from Algorand to NFT’s new EVM compatible blockchain
FIFA outlines a seamless transition to enhance the security and future capabilities of digital collectibles on the new blockchain.
Fifa Collect is a digital platform created by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) that lets you collect, trade and enjoy a digital collection featuring iconic moments from the history of football.
The transition, which is scheduled to begin earlier than May 20th, is intended to support the enhanced performance, future features and improved scalability of the platform’s digital collectible ecosystem.
According to FIFA, the changes will not affect your account or access to existing digital collectibles. All assets are completely secure and accessible throughout the transition process.
Upgrades will result in changes to wallet compatibility as Algolan-based wallets such as Pera and Defly no longer support post-migration support. Instead, users can connect using a metamask or other EVM compatible wallet that supports WalletConnect.
“The FIFA blockchain was created to support new experiences, enable wallet compatibility, and provide a stronger foundation for future innovation,” FIFA said in its migration FAQ document.
Users who exported the collections will need to reimport them prior to the migration date to ensure that they are included in the automatic transfer process. After the cutoff date, additional verification is required for manual migration.
USDC balances are available for expenditures up to the transition date and can be withdrawn after the transition, but are not spent. The listed collectibles will be automatically transferred to the new platform unless the user is deprecated prior to migration.
One-year partnership with FIFA’s Algorand
In May 2022, FIFA announced a strategic collaboration with Algorand, naming it the organization’s official blockchain partner. As part of the agreement, Algorand provided a wallet solution for blockchain support and played a key role in shaping FIFA’s digital asset strategy.
Through this collaboration, FIFA has explored blockchain-driven innovations such as Impossible Tokens (NFTS) and digital wallets, focusing on transparency, sustainability and revenue growth.
This partnership saw the launch of the FIFA collection in late 2022. The NFT platform powered by Algorand allows fans to collect and engage in iconic football moments in digital form.
Algo, Algorand’s native asset, fell 3% to $0.2213 on Binance following the news.
