President Donald Trump told ABC News on Tuesday that the Justice Department received fraudulent referrals based on work done by the government’s efficiency, a federal cost-cutting agency created and led by Elon Musk.
Trump was asked directly whether a referral was sent by Doge’s investigation, and he said I said, “Of course there was,” he didn’t name anyone. There is no office. There is no department. He said there was an introduction.
And he didn’t say it once. He did it over and over, sticking to the same word every time he was pushed – classic playing cards. There are no more details. There are no malfunctions. But that confirmation brings Doge deep into the middle of this administration’s crackdown on the bloated government system.
Government’s Department of Efficiency is destroying it through federal programs. Since January 20th, more than 200,000 federal workers have been fired. The entire agency was demolished or stripped by the skeletons. As soon as the firing begins, a legal battle arises, and multiple challenges are already moving.
Doge cuts agent while Elon is backing down
Musk, a “special civil servant,” runs doges from within. However, the role ends in May 130 days after it began. Musk told reporters he wouldn’t continue the same role full-time, but he is still planning to help Trump’s overhaul division from outside.
The fact that Musk has resigned is Doge not clear. Without the biggest enforcer, no one knows who’s calling the shot. But people close to Trump say cost cuts won’t stop. The mission is on track, whether Musk stays or not. It is yet to be determined what will happen to the next leadership.
The entire campaign is angering critics, who say the cut is reckless and cruel. They argue that Doge puts key sectors at risk, such as emergency services and foreign aid. But Trump and Musk say this is what’s necessary to wipe out corruption, overexpenditure and useless programs.
Doge, which updates its progress on its official website, claims it has saved $160 billion for US taxpayers. However, there are a lot of errors on that site. Posted numbers will continue to be edited, withdrawn or revised. the goal? Save $2 trillion. So far they are not close to that number.
US Treasury borrowing falls under Doge’s Knife
A new report reposted Tuesday by Doge’s X account (formerly Twitter) used data from the U.S. Treasury to show that federal borrowing needs have declined.
Specifically, in the second quarter of 2025, borrowing needs fell below $53 billion, up from what was expected in February. The change was directly linked to Doge’s work to reduce the cost of operating the entire agency.
The Treasury added a note in its second and third quarter updates confirming that “current quarter borrowing estimates are $53 billion lower than announced in February.”
It’s not a small drop. It is connected to a Doge slash of budget lines and personnel. And while it doesn’t solve everything, it’s clearly slowing down government borrowing rates for now, at least.
Ministry of Finance The above tax revenues are “slightly above the previous annual levels,” with spending hanging near the lowest edge of the historic range. The full statement added:
Receipts are slightly above the level of the same period last year (adjusted to the 2025 CBO forecast), but spending is close to the bottom of historic range, but unfortunately there isn’t enough space to make a noticeable impression in the long run. ”
So while Doge is saving money, it’s not fast enough to fix everything. But it’s lacking, so that’s enough for Trump to continue to commit to it.
